A Mosaic of Terroirs
A plot-based identity
At Domaine de la Janasse, the vineyard expresses itself through more than sixty plots, each with its own identity. We have explored every corner of this mosaic of terroirs. Indeed, our in-depth studies of the soils, their solar exposure, and microclimats have guided us in planting each grape variety in the most suitable location. This painstaking work, initiated by the Sabon ancestors, continues with the same rigor today. It does not stop at planting. We adapt our cultivation methods (pruning, debudding, soil management) to the specific reaction of the vine to its environment. It is a daily observation, a listening to the plant that spans decades to understand the balance between yield and the pure expression of the fruit.
Thus, our white grape varieties and our Syrah seek freshness and finesse. They thrive on sandy-limestone soils caressed by the morning sun. As for our powerful Mourvèdre, they soak up the sun and reach maturity on our clay-limestone plots covered with rounded pebbles.
The uniqueness of our lieux-dits and the soul of Grenache
The vineyard possesses an incredible diversity of plots. This is the key to the complexity and depth of our blends. It also gives rise to exceptional cuvées. These wines highlight unique terroirs, notably Chaupin, Les Garrigues, Terre d’Argile, and Terre de Bussière. Certain late-ripening plots produce the Chaupin and Les Garrigues cuvées, made from 100% Grenache—the emblematic grape variety of the Southern Rhône Valley. For us, Grenache reveals all its splendor and balance on cooler soils. In contrast, on terroirs with more generous heat, we marry its richness with the structure of Mourvèdre and the elegance of Syrah, creating a marvelous harmony.
Every year, the challenge remains the same: interpreting the nuances of the vintage through these fragmented terroirs. The final blend is not a recipe, but a quest for balance. The structure of one highlights the fruit of the other. It is through this respect for individual plot identities that La Janasse draws its signature: wines of character, profound, yet always guided by the Sabon touch.
